WHAT'S NOT WORKING: DAY 1 Buckled street in Oakland: $1.47 million. $1.69 million. $2.49 million. The homes for sale in the Broadway Terrace area of Oakland veer toward the high end of the real estate market. The area's streets? That's another matter, according to ChronicleWatch reader Tod Vedock, who says a section of Broadway Terrace near Hermosa Avenue has been decrepit for at least 10 months. The roots of a large tree have buckled the pavement there, pushing the concrete up into the air. After several bicyclists took a nasty spill on the convoluted surface last summer, Vedock says, Oakland put barriers around the hot spot. "Over time," he e-mails, "the barriers have fallen or been hit by cars (though) someone in the area will put them back up. ... The entire street of Broadway Terrace from Highway 13 intersection to Village Market is a mess of broken concrete and pot holes along with these barriers on the street." When ChronicleWatch visited the scene, the barriers were back up - and the street was still a mess. Two more months and Broadway Terrace near Hermosa will reach a dubious distinction: It will have been misshapen for a full year. Vedock is losing his patience. When ChronicleWatch contacted Oakland, a city spokeswoman said she'd get back to us when she was able. The barriers remind us the work is still to be done.
